How to React When You're Confronted with a Fire in Your House

Most people like to think that they would know how to react in the case of a fire breaking out in their homes. The reality, however, is that most people would not. Most people would be so shocked that they would not react in a calm and calculated way which in turn could make the fire that much more damaging to both the inhabitants of the house as well as the actual structure of the house itself. The difference between a fire being a mishap and a fire being devastating to a family and the house that they live in can very well be in the reaction that the members of the family have to the fire to begin with. If the members of a house react in the proper way, the negative effects of any house fires can definitely be contained if not entirely curtailed.

The first thing that should be done when the members of a household are alerted that there is in fact a fire in the house is to discover the magnitude of the fire. If the fire is small and can easily be contained or eliminated with a fire extinguisher than a member of the household should quickly get the fire extinguisher and eliminate the fire, before it spreads any further than it needs to. If the fire is already too big, then the members of the household should vacate the house immediately so that none of them are harmed by the fire. Any moderately sized fire should signal any member of the family to leave the house, the most important thing after all is the safety of the people who live within the house.

Second of all, every person within the house must react calmly to the fire. If people start freaking out this can lead to erratic behavior which in turn can cause more problems and cause more people to be harmed than should be. Once a fire alarm sounds, every person should try to find the safest way possible to vacate the house quickly. No person should try to grab any material objects, as this can waste time and put a person in danger just to get some object that can eventually be replaced. An object can be replaced, a human life cannot be replaced.

Any person, once out of the house, should call the fire department. While the fire alarm will typically signal the fire department to come quickly, it cannot hurt to call again and ensure that the firefighters are in fact coming and doing so quickly so that the fire can be eliminated from the house. Once people leave the house they should also ensure that they are a safe distance from the house, in the case that the fire causes any structural damage or spreads even further.

In order to prepare for a quick evacuation, any member of a household should know a way to quickly and effectively get out of any room in the house in the case of a fire. Preparation is always key, as if a person feels prepared for any potential incident than he or she will react better if and when the situation potentially arises.
