How to Develop an Emergency Escape Plan for Your House

The best way to avert any exacerbation of a potential disaster is to be fully prepared in the case of any disaster. While obviously no person plans on having a fire in his or her home and most people will do what they can to ensure that there is no fire in their house, it happens, people have fires in their homes. One way that a person can ensure that he or she is prepared for the potential of any fire in the house, is to prepare an emergency escape plan to get out of the house, so that every person inside the house remains unharmed by the fire. This is the most important thing, things can be replaced, but people cannot, so the safety of every member of the household is of the highest priority.

The first thing that any household should have is a drawn out floor plan of the whole house. This floor plan should be extensive and every room should be on it. In addition, all exits and which room they are out of should be clearly marked on the floor plan. Every member of the household should at least have a slight idea of the floor plan so that there can be quick action in the event of any potential fire emergency in the house. Not only should exits through doors be clearly marked, but a person should also be sure to include any windows or any other possible form of exit on the house floor plan. This is essential because in the case of a fire, no person can anticipate where the fire will be and how it will spread, so any and all possible exits need to be clearly portrayed on the floor plan.

Another thing that is also very important is that there are multiple ways to get out of every room. A person should ensure that he or she knows at least a couple of ways to get out of every room in the case that they find themself trapped within a room in the house.

A big part of the emergency escape plan should also account for any individual member of the house who is not able to escape on his or her own and will need the assistance of another individual. This will typically be little children, such as toddlers, or older people or maybe even a member of the family who has a broken leg or something of the sort.

As a means to keep some order once every member of the house vacates the house, there should be a predetermined meeting place that will be far enough away from the home to be safe from the fire, but close enough to the home that all the members of the house can reach the meeting place both easily and quickly.

While it may seem unnecessary for people to practice an escape out of their house in the case of a fire, it can definitely make a huge difference. If people do just one or two practice runs a year, then they can ensure that in the case of an actual emergency every member of the house will know what to do and therefore every person will be safer.
