Adults should ensure that both lighters and matches are well out of the reach of children so that a child does not play with either as it potentially harm the child and cause a fire as well. Children should never have access to lighters or matches.

Fireplaces in a home can also lead to accidental fires. A person should never ever leave a fireplace unattended for any reason. A person should also be very diligent about cleaning out the fireplace because too much smut and too many ashes in the fireplace can lead to the increased prevalence of a potential accidental fire in or around the fireplace.

Candles lit in the household can also lead to a potential accidental fire. A person should be very careful when lighting candles in his or her home. A person should make sure that the candle that he or she lights is, first of all, in a sturdy holder, so that it does not fall over while lit and start a fire. A person should also be aware if a candle is still lit, if he or she plans on leaving the house, then he or she should ensure that the candle is no longer lit, and it blown out before leaving. It is also essential that children do not play with candles or around them. They cannot only harm themselves, but they can start a fire by accidentally knocking over a candle that is lit.
